Traditionally, blogs were used as something like an online diary. They included links that the author had found interesting that day as well as life stories.

But I have my own Web server, are there blog tools for me?

Yes, there are a number of blog tools that work with the server you already have. My favorite is Movable Type. Another good one is Greymatter.

How can I post to my blog?

There are many different tools to use to post to your blog. Many of the applications allow things like posting from a desktop client, email posting, and even posting by phone. I have used a cell phone with Web access to post to my Weblog.

Are there other tools I can use to post?

There are many tools you can use to post to your Weblog. Most blog applications these days offer support for the Blogger API which allows desktop and mobile client tools to connect to the blog for posting and management.

Why would I want to use a client tool other than the blog application?

What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and it is a way to tell other people about your new blog entries. You post your Web log entries in the XML specification RSS. Then readers all over the world can view your blog entries on content aggregators. Or you can post content from other blogs on your site using RSS tools.

Getting Ideas

However in order for you to write effectively you first need to know what you are passionate about and write your posts based on those interests.

The best way to know what you’re passionate about is to ask yourself what would be the single most interesting thing you would like to do when you have all the time in the world?

Some people email me and asked where do I get the ideas and articles to write my blog post about. It actually very simple, I surf the internet everyday and read almost all the latest blog news available online.

Capture ideas from those blogs and what you can do is just write your articles based on other people’s stories. However do not try to copy word by word, you need to reword every single word there is before you publish your content.

Internet is a big marketplace, there will always be people copying your content and stuff. Even worst experience in some cases people refund just for the sake of getting a free book out of me ( sure are losers! ).

It is sad that people really do that but anyway I guess that’s life.

Which Platform You Should Use

I noticed many blogs do not actually use Wordpress and that was the reason why I came out with my book which has already helped countless number of people to setup their blogs with Wordpress with step by step instructions.

You “get” that a blog is a great marketing tool. And you want to jump on the bandwagon…but are you starting in the right place?

For many people, the first step they take is to research and find the correct blog software and then jump in and start creating their blog (or get someone else to do it).

But I believe this isn’t the right place to start with your blog.

First you need to decide what kind of content you’re going to provide via your fabulous new business blog.

There are 3 things you need to do in order to figure out what kinds of valuable information you want to write your blog posts on.

The first thing is to be clear on the following questions:

o your target group: what do they need and what kind of information do they like?

o your objective: what are you trying to achieve with your blog?

o your level of involvement: are you going to be the only one making posts or will you have guest bloggers?

o your money and time resources: how much time and money do you have to spend on it?

o your level of interactivity: how interactive are you going to be – run contests, have comments, show videos and post audio clips?

The second things you need to do is make sure that the content on your blog is important to your target group or niche.

Like a website or any other marketing communications you do, your blog needs to be something that your target group finds valuable and has need of. So you need to choose content that you know your prospects and clients want.

There are several ways to find this out:

- research the needs of your target market

- do a survey

- get feedback from your current clients and customers

- get clear on what problem your target audience wants solved and the benefits you offer

The third thing is to decide which of these two categories you fall into:

a) those that provide information by writing about it

b) those that provide information by linking to it – other blogs, news sources, other media, YouTube, etc.

RSS has changed the entire outlook of the online news. RSS means Really Simple Syndication is the family of the web feed formats like the blogs, news updates and the likes. It is basically a format delivering regularly changing web content. An RSS document usually contains full or epitomized text and metadata of the publisher. It is the latest technology which allows you to follow information from multiple sources. These multiple sources are news websites, blogs and forums of the sort.

RSS benefits the users who would like to get the updates from their bookmarked and favorite websites. It can also be used to gather aggregate feeds from different favored websites.

How RSS works would be a major query for the web-laymen. It works by having the webmaster of the particular website maintaining the list of notifications on their website in an organized way. These notifications are called as “RSS Feeds” and users who are interested in knowing the updates check on this list. There are “RSS Aggregators” which automatically access these RSS feeds and get the results from the websites users really care about. And what makes RSS possible is XML(Extensible Markup Language) which is a kind of code for the web content that could be easily handled by variety of communication devices and mediums.

To read an RSS feed all you would need is RSS feed readers. There are numerous feed readers available online. Popular web-based feed readers would be My Yahoo, Bloglines, Google Reader and the likes. The feed readers are also available for different platforms. For eg, you have FeedReader for Windows operating system, Amphetadesk for Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems. There are several such feed readers available at users own discretion, each feed reader offering different features. Using one such feed reader would be enough for you to have an unlimited access to variety of information sources. Every time the source which has been setup is updated that particular piece of information is stored in the computer. There would be a link appearing which is clickable and when you click on the link you have the access to the entire information which could be news article, blog post or anything which was subscribed for. 

So how RSS profits the most to the user is, saving time. Time being the most important constraint, RSS feeds saves the time for the users because they don’t have to visit each site individually and users can still stay informed by retrieving latest content from the sites they are interested in. 

RSS has contributed a lot in the way entire online news system works. News updates are not something which are periodical in nature. One moment nothing happens and the second moment you might find out an event with incredible importance just occurred. So, how to keep track of all this? The answer is RSS and the reasons have been well justified.

As a regular blog writer and reader I have noticed that one area which is lacking from the blogosphere is quality corporate blogs. That is not to say that they do not exist, just that they are not as wide spread as celebrity or entertainment blogs. The obvious reply to this argument is that people are more interesting in entertainment and therefore more people will read about subjects like that. I feel that blogs can be powerful tools which can move beyond the social and entertainment realm.
